Extended Student Visitor visa for English language students now available
10 January 2011
From today 10 January 2011 English language students wishing to attend exclusively English language courses will be able to apply for a student visitor visa allowing them to stay for up to 11 months. The Extended Student Visitor visa will only be available to applicants outside of the United Kingdom.
Students wishing to study non-English Language courses in the UK for longer than 6 months are still required to apply under Tier 4 of the points-based system.
Non visa-nationals, who would not normally need a visa to study for up to 6 months, must apply for the extended visa if they wish to remain longer.
The requirements, entitlements and restrictions of the Extended Student Visitor visa are the same as the current Student Visitor visa and can be found in our Visitors - visa application guide. The Student Visitor visa does not allow students to work, take a work placement, bring dependants or extend their stay. The fee will also be the same as the Student Visitor visa.
A review of the Extended Student Visitor visa wil be carried out within the next 12 months to ensure it is operating as intended.
This change does not affect the ongoing student consultation on the main student route to the UK - Tier 4 of the points-based system - which has set out proposals to tackle abuse and make the system more selective and robust.

Immigration Rules Paragraphs 56K - 56M
This category is designed for those who wish to undertake a short course of study whilst visiting the UK – for example, a beginner's English language course or a work related training course. You can only study whilst on a visit to the UK if you apply as a Student Visitor or, if you are under 18, as a Child Visitor. A student visitor is not entitled to stay for more than 6 months and you will not be able to extend your stay either into full time study or to do a new course whilst you are in the UK. Importantly, as a student visitor, you will not be able to work part-time or undertake work experience or a work placement *
As a student visitor you will need to show that you meet the main requirements of the general visitor rules and you must be able to show that you have been accepted on a course of study at an educational establishment that meets the following requirement.
The full requirements of the student visitor category are found under Paragraphs 56K of the Immigration Rules.
The institution where you intend to study must either be:
- the holder of a Sponsor Licence for Tier 4 of the points-based system:
Register of sponsors licenced under the points-based system - Or accredited by a UK Border Agency approved accreditation body.

The PBS Points Calculator for Tier 1 (General) applications provides information on overseas institutions recognised by NARIC as offering programmes at an equivalent of a UK degree. *if you intend to undertake a course of more than 6 months duration or you wish to have full 'student' visa entitlements in the UK (that is, the ability to work part-time or extend your visa) you should apply under Points-based system -Tier 4. Concession for student visitors studying English language courses If the length of your course is shorter than 6 months you will be granted leave for 6 months only under the Student visitor Immigration Rules. How do I apply for the Student visitor concession? If your application is refused your right of appeal will be limited to Human Rights and / or Race Relations grounds only in accordance with Section 84(1)(b) and / or (c) of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002. Please see the flowcharts below for further information:
A separate concession was introduced on 10 January 2011 for applicants who wish to study English Language courses only for longer than 6 months. You must satisfy the requirements of Paragraphs 56K – 56M of the Immigration Rules, however, you may be granted leave for a maximum of period of 11 months outside of the Immigration Rules if you are coming to study an English language course that is longer than 6 months.
For the purposes of this concession an English Language course is defined as a course in English language for students whose first language is not English and who are learning it as a foreign language. Mixed courses with a portion of time spent learning English will not qualify for the concession.
To apply for this concession you must use application form VAF 1D below. If applying online you must pick the route on Visa4UK called "(General) student visitor, to study English language" which will take you to form VAF 1D.
